20 Questions is a Q&A interview series with musicians, authors, and everyone in between, celebrating experiences both shared and individual in the messy game of being human.
Nathalie Cadlini, known mononymously as NATHALIE, began singing at the age of 8 behind the couch in her mother’s living room. Too shy to sing in front of other people, she would sit there for hours, belting out every word to her favorite songs by everyone from Britney Spears to Linkin Park.
It wasn’t until 2020 that she gained enough confidence to go public with her passion for singing and music, finally writing and recording her own songs that have been influenced by a wide variety of artists she grew up listening to. “Ten for the Tenth Time,” her debut single, is a dance-worthy breakup tune sure to bring some much-needed light to a collectively difficult year.
I had the pleasure of chatting with NATHALIE for the latest edition of 20 Questions. She told me all about what inspired her debut single, why Lady Gaga is the ultimate icon and influence, why staying in bed watching a good TV series is her favorite place to be, and much more.
What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
My passion for singing. It’s one of the only things that makes me feel truly alive. Music is everything.
Who did you grow up listening to?
I grew up listening to Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, Celine Dion… then moved to Linkin Park, Nightwish, Fort Minor, Red Hot Chilli Peppers in my teens. I listen to many different genres now, but mainly pop.
Favorite artists of all-time?
Lady Gaga and Freddie Mercury.
Musically, who are your biggest influences?
I’d say Lady Gaga’s energy, Halsey’s writing, Lana Del Rey’s mood, and Blackpink’s hard work.
Where is your favorite place in the world to be?
It’s weird, but I don’t have one. I do enjoy being in my bed quite a lot watching a good TV series, wherever that is.
Biggest pet peeve?
The sound of someone biting an apple next to me. Chills.
What inspired the songwriting process for your debut single “Ten for the Tenth Time”?
I was thinking about a past relationship and all the back and forth that lasted years. I put myself back in that situation where I would obsessively think about this person even though I shouldn’t. I wanted her back but knew there was a reason things ended. You’re both still attracted to each other so you just feel in this never ending limbo.
Favorite vacation spot and why?
Thailand. Amazing food, people, everything. So peaceful. I feel like I could truly rest and relax there.
Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
Ambivert!
You’re stuck on a long flight. Which world-famous musician would you want sitting next to you and why?
Lady Gaga again. She’s so kind, creative, crazy. It would be amazing to get to know her.
The last series you binge-watched?
The Queen’s Gambit. I highly recommend it!
Which genre would you describe your music as falling into?
Pop and electropop.
One movie that will always make you cry?
I tend to avoid these so probably Titanic because like everyone else, I too have seen it.
Favorite quote of all-time?
“The mind is everything. What you think, you become.”
One song that you will never be sick of?
“Marry the Night” by Lady Gaga. I put it on whenever I need a quick pick up or when I’m celebrating or even just to calm my nerves. This song is iconic to me.
The last book you finished?
The play Who Killed ‘Agatha’ Christie? by Tudor Gates. It’s so chaotic, I loved it.
Who is your style icon?
I don’t have anyone in particular. I love crazy, bold, fun shapes. Ultimately, my favorite artists are also my style icons.
One thing that’s been keeping you sane throughout the COVID-19 pandemic?
Songwriting, no doubt.
Dogs or cats?
I love and want both.
What can we expect to hear next from you?
I am already working on my next single and it will be out early 2021!
